The concept of patient sign-out applications has not gained widespread adoption. Many clinicians question the necessity of a digital app when a simple paper list, easily carried in a pocket and scribbled on during rounds, has proven effective and reliable for patient care.
Nonetheless, paper lists present notable disadvantages. They are susceptible to loss, which can lead to significant compliance issues, including potential HIPAA violations. Additionally, carrying sensitive patient information on paper does not offer the security that electronic solutions can provide.
In response, we developed the iTrack application. It functions similarly to a task management tool, enabling users to create and follow through on assigned tasks. What distinguishes this solution is its compatibility with existing paper lists—users can simply photograph their printed lists to digitize them. The app's annotation features—usable via finger or Apple Pencil on an iPad—allow for precise editing using crop and zoom functionalities that are not available through standard image applications on smartphones. Importantly, storing images directly on personal devices raises privacy concerns; iTrack addresses this by securely handling data within the cloud environment.
All information is stored securely in the cloud, ensuring data retention even if devices are lost. This approach simplifies managing extensive past patient lists that residents often carry physically, allowing for easy cloud storage and retrieval, with options to print as needed.
The task management component offers additional advantages. Users can set alarms for critical tasks, with push notifications sent at designated times. If team members share the same account login, these notifications synchronize across all authorized devices, facilitating coordinated care.
Patient data storage within the app is flexible; users can decide what information to retain digitally. Additional details—such as laboratory results—can be captured simply by taking photos and annotating them if updates become available. This approach minimizes unnecessary data entry while providing quick access to relevant information.
The app’s versatility allows it to serve as a comprehensive list management system for individual practitioners or entire teams, without requiring complex technical setup.
Data security is ensured through Firebase, which employs end-to-end encryption for all patient information, making the app fully compliant with HIPAA standards.
Subscription options include monthly or annual plans, granting complete access to all features upon purchase. A one-week free trial is available without obligation; cancellation before renewal is straightforward via the Settings app. Auto-renewal can be disabled one day prior to billing cycle.
